This is a kind of soundtrack, inspired by listening to The Mixtape on RNZ’s Music 101 by former presenter on the programme Yadana Saw (01/24/2023). I really thought about how she said it’s so hard to choose 5-7 songs “that you can talk about, that you want to share but don’t want to feel judged by, that you really love and want to advocate for, that will also sound good on the radio”. It made me think, what would be my songs? Hard to keep it short but here are my top seven, that I loved from the moment I heard them, and which were musical/life markers in some way – from “20 Solid Gold Hits” pop to 70s ‘heavy rock’ and glam to punk to … everything that followed that:

Bowie – Queen Bitch. I discovered Bowie in the mid-late 70s via a friend of my friend Peter Howey – we used to go to Michael Brennan’s house quite regularly and he had “ChangesOneBowie”, and then I bought “Hunky Dory” and “Ziggy” second-hand off another friend, Alan Munro; they were both in rough condition, but I immediately loved Queen Bitch with Mick Ronson’s ‘heavy’ guitar sound combined with Bowie’s singing of what is quite a poppy song.

The Chills – Satin Doll (or: Frantic Drift). Totally fell in love with The Chills and the ‘Flying Nun Sound’ from the first moment I heard it – which actually started with seeing Sneaky Feelings play live in a Timaru back yard (along with other bands including Say Yes to Apes). The dreamy, psychedelic, 60s-influence in Martin Phillipps’ songwriting filled me with such joy!

The Fall – Totally Wired (or: Lay of the Land). I didn’t love The Fall, until I did. I can remember driving in Annabel Scott’s car with “Grotesque” on the stereo and not liking it at all; but within a few months I had become a total convert, and I just loved the sound and lyrics of this song.

Joy Division – Interzone. As detailed in the Trainspotting section, I got into Joy Division on Jordan Luck’s recommendation, and was attracted to the band straight away, mainly because their music was like nothing else I had heard before, quite mysterious even, helped by the production/sound by Martin Hannett.

Yo La Tengo – Nowhere Near. Thanks to Pete McFarlane I fell in love with the hard guitar combined with super-pop melodies of YLT, but what gets me with this song is the added, slow-building tension that is so powerful.

Sugar – Changes. I feel like I could say that I think this is The Best Pop Song Ever (just a bit better than The Las’ There She Goes); having been a big fan of Hüsker Dü and then Bob Mould’s first solo albums, I read about Sugar in the NME and had to check them out – fantastic song, and I went on to buy all the music and see as many live shows as I could; so much power.

Roots Manuva – Juggle Tings Proper. Yes, this is quite different to the other songs. I had had an interest in rap and hip hop since, well, The Message, and then from the mid-80s, but when I heard a song by this new guy on RDU I went straight to Galaxy Records and bought the “Brand New Second Hand” album from Dave, and loved every track; I just found Rodney Smith had come up with his own take on the scene, and then he started to show up everywhere because he was so clever and creative, plus the cool voice.

Ideally, these would be in the above list as well:

Led Zeppelin – Kashmir. “Physical Graffiti” was my first Led Zep purchase, and for me it was a double album filled with very cool music, of which Kashmir was the standout with that distinctive drumming and general noise assault.

10CC – I’m Mandy Fly Me. Back to my friend Peter, and driving around in the car of another friend of his (Grant Anderson), we would listen to the “How Dare You” album, and I loved it whenever this song came on, it almost made me cry (!). I bought my own copy on cassette.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Cinnamon Girl (live). I listened to a lot of music that was different to what I was into in the late 70s via Steve Tuite, and that’s where my long obsession with Neil Young started, and “Live Rust” was probably the peak of that.

The Bats – Joe’s Again, or Courage. More Flying Nun, and The Bats became one of my big favourites, I have seen them many times, and they really are a fantastic live band, especially back in the 80s and 90s; another band of super-poppy songs but with their own sound via Bob Scott’s singing and Paul Kean’s bouncy basslines, heavenly.

Gang of Four – The History of the World. I already owned and enjoyed “Entertainment!” and “Solid Gold” when the “Songs of the Free” album came along, but this took me to a new place – moving their punk sensibilities perfectly into glossy production and more sophisticated but clever songs, I really adore (still) the whole album.

REM – Radio Free Europe. The son of a work acquaintance at the time, Nigel Solomon, played me “Murmur” and that was it for me, off on a long trip following REM, initially for the same reason as with The Chills I guess: the retro psychedelic sound, but made in the 80s.

Fugazi – Waiting Room. When I discovered Fugazi I instantly fell in love with the band, their energy, their perfect interpretation of how punk music should be, loud and smart. There’s a live video on YouTube of this song that is exactly as my first time was, everybody singing the lyrics, amazing atmosphere – someone comments: “This is the perfect example of what music is meant to do to people.”

Leftfield – Afro-Left (or: Open Up). I still absolutely adore the “Leftism” album, and it was hard to choose just one song from it. John Peel used to receive hundreds of CDs, records and tapes every week, and he had to try and work his way through the piles to find things that he deemed worthy of putting out to the listeners of his show, which was only a couple of hours long, two times a week – and over a few weeks he played every one of the eight tracks from Leftism and explained that he had to because it was so good. Rated as one of the best dance albums ever.

Shabazz Palaces – A Mess… Same as with Roots Manuva, I found this act (on Sub Pop!), actually mainly Ishmael Butler (ex-Digable Planets), as being really different to other hip hop, and in a very creative, intelligent and distinctive way; I have bought everything so far.

Moderat – Bad Kingdom. A ‘super group’ of the German artists from Modeselektor and Apparat (hence, Moderat), I find their music really stands out as unique in the huge world of electronic music, much of which I love but I pick my way through discerningly, and their tracks can include great vocal melodies, especially this song.

Red Axes – Bela Lugosi’s Dead. Everything this Israeli electronic duo put their hands to is so cool, very creative, including guitar quite often. This cover of the Bauhaus classic is a bit different to their usual style, more subdued, but works as a brilliant interpretation, love it. Love them.

And then there’s this big, long list of songs that have meant (or do mean) something to me – or I just like them. It’s a bit messed up chronologically, and I’ve tried to keep it to one song per artist; it’ll be continually added to I guess:
